When talking to the opposite sex about the products they buy in their daily lives, you may have heard them complaining about how expensive it is to be a male or female. But who really spends the most when it comes to the essentials? Are similar products drastically overpriced for females compared to males or is it just not true? How much does it truly cost to be a man or a woman?

We decided to find this out by analyzing the prices of some of the most popular products bought at major retail outlets for both males and females to see if pricing really is fair between the sexes. Our research revealed some surprising results.

When it comes to hair care, men get the short end of the stick. As it turns out, shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, and even finishing cream that has been branded towards men is more expensive than the female equivalent.

You’d think razors are pretty much the same in functionality, and you’d be right, however female razors are a whopping $4.58 more expensive than their male counterparts. This price gap applies to shaving cream also; female shaving cream is $3.86 more expensive than male shaving cream.

Face care highlights a dramatic difference in pricing for women with female moisturizer being over $18 more expensive than the male branded equivalent.

Clothing is where we start to see some big price increases for female products. A pair of jeans, for example, is $28.50 more expensive for females than the male version and a leather jacket is an enormous $80 more expensive for females.'

Wanting to look your best in the office? A business suit is $80 more expensive for females than males.

Time for a change in pricing? We think so as a watch is $143 more expensive for females than the male counterpart.

The total to buy all of these female products you ask? Well, it’s $2,128.51 compared to the male product total of $1,674.64, that’s an extra $453.87 if you’re female. That means, on average, a woman will have to spend 27% more than a man on the essentials. Not to mention, females typically have more products that they need to purchase than men (think feminine hygiene, makeup, etc.)

So there you have it: overall, it costs more to be a female when it comes to buying essential products and staple clothing items.
